Building Models has been a popular hobby for many years. From ships in bottles, to model race cars, to fighter planes, and in my case Mecha Models. Now I've built some of the former before, usually with mixed results. Sufficed to say, my Millenium Falcon leaves much to be desired. But my primary model building is related to Gundam Models. Models from the show Mobile Suit Gundam and it's various spinoffs. I'll be sure to post some pictures of some of my better ones. The reason I started this thread was that my brother sent me a gift from Korea and it just arrived today. Oddly enough, 3 days after he left to return to Korea. Knowing that I love Gundam, and building Gundam models he told me that he had gotten me a Gundam model before he left. I was all "Is it a High Grade? Master Grade?" He couldn't remember and thought it was a Master Grade. This was the highest grade that I had built before, and it was somewhat intricate. I open the package today, and it's not a High Grade, and it's not a Master Grade.......it was a Perfect Grade!!! These are like the Bugatti Veyron of the Gundam Models. Very detailed, with hundreds of parts. And I'm not joking about that, this sucker has HUNDREDS of parts. Usually I'd spend an evening building one of the regular models, but this is something that I'm going to take time with, and I'll post pictures of my progress along the way. ![]() There is a God...and it's got a Shining Finger!! |

This model is very intricate. The fingers are all articulated, as if they were real fingers. And while it looks as though the pieces of armor on the arm are whole, they do move and you can see the interior workings of the arm. It's very cool, and you have to see it for yourself to fully appreciate it. This is going to be a long project, but the end result will be very fulfilling.

At this point, I went to acquire the batteries I'd need to run the LED. This wasn't an easy task, because LR34 button batteries are not a common battery. I found LR44, which had the same diameter, but they were too deep and I couldn't get the lid over the battery compartment. So I had to go back out and find something compatible, which I did finally find. And since it was towards the construction of the Gundam, I count it towards construction time. 16 Hours, 40 Minutes: Jetpack Unit Complete (8:10pm 6/26/09) ![]() 16 Hours, 50 Minutes: Upper Body Assembled (8:20pm 6/26/09) ![]() 17 Hours, 15 Minutes: Waist Unit Assembled (8:45pm 6/26/09) ![]() 19 Hours, 40 Minutes: Beam Cannon, Hyper Bazooka, and Shield Completed (10:15pm 6/26/09) ![]() 20 Hours, 10 Minutes: Gundam Mk. II RX-178 Assembly Completed, minus Decals (10:45pm 6/26/09) ![]() Size Comparison: Zeta Gundam (1:144) and Gundam Mk II (1:60) ![]() This was certainly the biggest Gundam Model undertaking that I have done. But it was worth every moment of it. The LED lights do work, and his head lights up. Unfortunately the cockpit was also supposed to light up, but it wasn't working. Thankfully though, I don't plan to open it up much at all, so I'm not bothered. |

Wanna give a couple quick tips for those who are casual model builders like myself. Yes, I consider myself a casual builder...this was the biggest project I ever did to date. Two of your best friends will be a small pair of scissors and a nail-clipper. The scissors I used were out of an old manicure kit, so they fit real easy inside the runners holding the pieces. I was able to snip them off real easy, and not break any of the parts off. Using the nail clipper, you can clip off the bits that were attached to the runners, so there are no little nubs sticking out all over the place, and in some cases preventing you from fitting the pieces properly. Since this is all snap-tite building, save for a few screws in the higher grades, it really makes a difference, and saves you from having to sand down the pieces to make them smooth. I just went through 20+ hours of building the RX-178, but I want to build another one already! Someone get me the Gundam RX-78-2 Perfect Grade! I'm ready to go in again!! |

With the decals done, the RX-178 Gundam Mk. II takes it's rightful place with the rest of the Gundam Models at center stage. ![]() ![]() BTW, the number 01 is one I chose for a reason. Those familiar with Zeta Gundam, which the RX-178 first appeared, will remember that Kamille Bidan's stolen Mk. II was number 03. 02 was flown by a couple of pilots, but 01 was flown by Emma Sheen when she, Kamille, and Franklin Bidan stole the Gundams a second time and defected to the AEUG. There aren't enough prominent female mobile suit pilots in the Gundam universe. Thankfully Zeta Gundam had several (Reccoa Londe, Sarah Zabiarov, Haman Karn, Four Murasame, Lila Milla Rira, Rosamia Badam) and the most prominent and strong-willed was Emma Sheen. So for everything, there is a reason.
