![]() Akikan! Aired in Japan 01/03/2009 to 03/28/2009
A description I'm proud to say that I wrote for Anime News Network. Nice to leave a little of my otaku legacy behind for others to see. ![]() Another high school love comedy with several angles, yuri love, yaoi love, not to mention fighting magical girls that appear from juice cans. Only in Japan, they say. What would we do without it? Overall I liked this series. Melon is the typical Tsundere character whom you know likes Kakeru, but hides it behind her gruff demeanor. Her true self shines though, especially when she's rooting for the Hanshin Tigers Baseball Team. A personal favorite of mine as well, so that only endeared her to me more. I think the dynamic between the four central characters of Kakeru, Melon, Najimi, and Yell came together nicely in the first half of the series. If the series had only gone six episodes, I believe that it would have ended nicely in the sixth episode. It was the second half of the series that made you want to raise your eyebrows and go 'what the hell?' After a steady pacing in the first half, the second half started out with four episodes of fluff high school comedy material. The comedic conflict at school, the following of the 'owners' on a date to a water park. The one episode out of these that I enjoyed though, showcased what the three main Akikan girls did when they're owners weren't at home. Melon and her attempt to do the laundry, Yell getting distracted by a dragonfly, and then Budoko as a princess. Very charming, and very endearing. This was all brought down abruptly though with the last two episodes rushing against the 'Strongest Akikan'. I've always been keen to point out pacing problems in shows, and this is one of them. Everything involving the 'Strongest Akikan' felt very rushed and put together in the final two episodes. This is a story arc I feel could have been better fleshed out and told, given at least two or three more episodes. I'm all for telling a good story in a short amount of time, but this you could feel was rushed together. Overall though, the series was captivating enough to keep wanting to watch the next episode. The characters were endearing, and the action wasn't bland. At twelve episodes, it's a series that doesn't require a lengthy involvement. If you want a dose of fun, you wouldn't go wrong with picking this one up. An Akikan OVA was greenlit shortly after it's broadcast run. No further details are available at the time of this review. |
