An art student named Jin Mikuriya carves a statue from the wood of the Kannagi tree only to have the statue come to life in the form of a goddess, who has now taken over the statue. He and "Nagi" work together to destroy the impurities that are gathering in the town.

It seems I'm drawn to harem series like a moth to a flame, so it was no surprise that I took to Kannagi like a bonfire. The story started out very simply. Jin Mikuriya, a high school student who lives alone, carves a wood statue from the wood of a tree that used to be on the land of a nearby shrine. The shrine was torn down, the tree cut down, and the wood was given to him to carve a statue for an upcoming festival. How was he supposed to know there was a 'Goddess' living inside the tree. Strangely enough, this isn't the first time he's seen her either. Years ago when he was a little boy she appeared to him and kept him safe, disappearing just as mysteriously.

This series has all the familiar elements. The childhood friend who secretly has feelings for Jin, the romantic rival to Nagi, who also happens to be her sister, the female pervert who likes to look at frilly dresses....while other girls are wearing them, the otaku, they're all here. Did it make me enjoy the series any less with all the familiarity? No, not at all, not in this case. Usually I'm thrown off by the concept that 'this has been done before'. But I think it's done in a way that's somewhat unique with an air of mystery.

The series did hit one of my pet peeves where they start off with a base storyline, and then fluff off until the very end, when they revert back to the original basis of the series. Nagi's main goal is to rid the town of 'impurities', with Jin's help, since she can't touch them herself. The first 3-4 episodes dealt with this premise, and then after that each episode turned into a 'slice of life' episode, dealing with every day happenings. Around the last three episodes, they picked back up on the original premise, and the odd thing is they actually addressed this, saying that she had slacked off on cleansing the impurities. In most other series that I've seen where they return to the original premise, they just do it without any explanation for why they did it, and it made things confusing. Personally I'm still scratching my head at the pacing for Gunparade March, but it's still one of my favorites, so go figure.

That being said, this was a very entertaining series. The drama had it's place along with the comedy, the action, and the ending episodes arc was very heartwarming. The opening theme sets the mood with an upbeat and catchy tune, sung and performed by Nagi. If this is the type of performance that Haruka Tomatsu generally provides, it's no wonder she was recently awarded Best New Actress at the 3rd Annual Seiyyu awards, and I suspect we'll be hearing more from her in the future as well.

If a company doesn't pick this up in the US, they'll be passing on a very entertaining series that has a little something for everyone. Comedy, High School Romance, Drama, and a little bit of action thrown in to boot. If you have a chance to watch this, do so, you'll be doing yourself a favor.
