Okay, First off, I know Rommie from other boards, so hiya. Next.... Anyone have ideas on what kinda Anime I should start out with? Something that isn't confusing. lol.... I'm one of those folks that always thought of Anime as a stupid kiddie program. But, Rommie has help stop that idea from chats we've had on other boards. So... Fire away on Anime suggestions. Just take it easy on my. I'm new. -Tibbetts

Welcome, Tibbetts!
Always great to see folks giving anime a shot.A couple questions for you to help narrow the field a bit: 1. What are your favorite live action shows? 2. Have you seen any anime already that didn't impress you much? The best generic bet for newbies right now is to check out the Cartoon Network on Saturday nights from about 11:30 PM-2:00 AM. They have a nice variety of anime running in that period right now, and there's a little something for everyone. Also, on Monday-Thursday from 1:00 AM-2:00 AM, Cartoon Network shows Fullmetal Alchemist and Cowboy Bebop, which are both HIGHLY recommended... Don't expect to like EVERYTHING you see. It can sometimes take a little trial and error to find the anime niche that really suits you. |

I agree with Niko. Cartoon Network is a pretty good bet for anime for newbies right now because of the diversity in their lineup. I also highly recommend Cowboy Bebop (the anime that got me hooked on anime ) and Fullmetal Alchemist.I think that you'll really enjoy anime once you find some shows that fit your likes. And feel free to ask us any questions, cause that's what we're hear for!

Hey Tibbetts, welcome to the Jumpgate. Glad to see you made your way over here. Knowing that you're a military buff, I can recommend a few in that genre. Area 88 is a recent title that just came out this past Tuesday. It deals with a fighter squadron out of a desert base called Area 88 in the fictional Kingdom of Aslan. I've written a review for it in the Reviews forum which gives a better description of it, so check it out. For a classic military/action story, look no further than Robotech. The series that's been said to have started the anime craze back in the mid 80's is still just as popular today, if not more with the highly anticipated Shadow Chronicles coming out soon. Fighter planes, mecha, great story, there's not much more you can ask for. If you want something that's a bit more realistic while still maintaining that fantasy quality, then I would recommend Gasaraki. Essentially it deals with how the world would react if Mecha were introduced into today's society as a tactical weapon. It's a bit on the slow paced side, but the story is sound, and really in depth. If you got any questions, feel free to ask them. That's what we're here for. Rommie

Niko & Pipster: Thanks for the welcome and suggestions.
Rommie: I found Area 88 at Netflix, but, there are two. Area 88 Act#1: The Blue Skies of Betrayal and Area 88 TV(2-Disc). Should I get the two disc set first? As for Robotech: I've added Vol.1: The Macross Saga-First Contact. -Tibbetts |

If you like military themes, you might want to try Yukikaze. It's very hardware-oriented. Right now there's just the one DVD available in the US, which could be a plus or a minus: a plus because it won't mean a great investment of your time to watch it, and a minus because the story isn't finished, dammit. (I hear that they just finished airing the last ep in Japan, though, so it should be available over here soonish.) |

That is extremely odd. The 'Blue Skies of Betrayal' refers to the Area 88 OVA, which is the original version of this series. If you're able to find that, it's a real find. As for Area 88 TV being a 2-disc set, is mind-bending, because it's only a 1-disc release. There are no 2-disc versions released, to my knowledge. And ADV just released it this past Tuesday, so I would hopefully know. Either way, good on you for Robotech. Rommie

First of all, welcome to our little corner of the cyber-universe!
Since you're so new to the medium, I say Robotech, while the animation is a little dated in places, is a very good place to start, a story that contains three sagas that can more or less be watched standalone, though "do" very much connect to each other at the same time. As for films, if you're at all interested in historical films, please do yourself an immense favor and watch Grave of the Fireflies, a film that follows the plights of a brother and his younger sister after their mother is killed in a fire-bomber raid on their small Japanese town during World War II. Please, this is one of the best films, animated or not, of its kind. Most everyone who's seen this Anime has walked away loving it. Hope this helps.

Oh, if you're using Netflix, that makes life so much easier.
First, I'll second Nexus's "Grave of the Fireflies" rec. I honestly think that should be required viewing for everyone. On a military angle, I'm surprised Rommie didn't mention "Full Metal Panic". I thought the military stuff in that series was very well done. Plus, it's got a lot of great comedy that is typical anime slapstick stuff in addition to the serious story, so it makes a good "starter" series, imo. |

ya know, I've been seriously considering signing up with Netflix recently. Maybe after I move and don't have my free rentals from the store anymore.

Well, I recentely saw RoboTech, and I have to say that I didn't like it. I watched 2.5 of the 4 episodes. I couldn't even finish the third episode. It just hit me as absurd, idiotic, and childish. No offense to those that like it. If you do, all the power to ya's. For me, it just wasn't worth the hour I wasted watching it.Thanks all for the suggestions. But, since this is an Anime board, I guess I won't need to come back if I'm not an Anime fan. Take care all, and I'll see a couple of ya at my board. Thanks again. -Tibbetts |
