Tonight's Samurai Champloo on CN; #8, I believe...

Wasn't totally sure whether this should be in GD or Reviews, so feel free to move it...

So I'm watching this show that got a number of mentions in the "Where to start?" thread, while simultaneously checking out a reviews site to get caught up on the plot...

I have only three observations thus far:

1. Jin seems very cool.

2. Hip-hop sensibilities in historical Japan go together better than I would have thought...

3. SPOILER WARNING

When you're in the bar and the ultra-hot girl hits on you at random, NEVER kiss her and NEVER drink what she gives you. Of COURSE she's going to poison you. According to fiction, this is what ultra-hot girls do all day: Hang around bars waiting to poison the unsuspecting. I'm afraid I wouldn't know. ;)

But the point is... if she likes you, ALWAYS be suspicious. Sheesh! Even I know this... ;)

I've seen one ep of this anime (the first, actually) and I found it fairly unusual. Two unlikable protagonists, one peppy girl and lots of lots of blood. It wasn't interesting enough for me to continue with the series but it was a good way to kill 25 minutes. ;)

Actually I found tonight's episode pretty compelling. I could see myself turning into a serious Jin fan... he's got game. ;)

All Jin did in the first episode was look badass and swear a lot. ;) Oh, and chop up lots of people. Maybe he gets more depth later on...

That actually sounds more lke Mugen. Jin's more quiet and reserved. Even when he's fighting.

And I just loved tonight's Jin-riffic eppy! Very deep and lots of nummy Jin moments. :)

Mugen is the impetuous one, right? Jin is the noble looking one. They cut out his swearing for the CN version but in the Japanese version, he does it a lot. ;)

And the really sad thing is that Mugen's already been burned by this once before with a random hottie they met along the side of the road. You'd think the guy would learn. :)

I very much appreciated getting some focus on Jin in this episode. I figured his story had to be something like that, but it's good to have confirmation. I wonder if Mugen has any backstory besides a life of wandering around pissing people off. :rollaugh:

Also loved Fuu putting her life in the hands of two very hung-over swordsmen. Impressive courage that girl has. :)

I just want mention that Samurai Champloo gets a lot better after the first couple of episodes. The overall plot definitely isn't the point of the series though. It's all about what the characters experience on their way to find the "samurai that smells of sunflowers."

And for the record, it is definitely Mugen that does all the swearing. A classic Mugen line is "Don't f*** with me!" (usually to Jin or Fuu). ;)

Most definitely. You'll have to wait until episodes 13 and 14 though. He has a two-parter. ;)

Hai. She does. :)

Also, anyone interested in catching up on the series, keep an eye out for episode 12. It's a clip episode that reviews everything the characters have done up to that point. There's a twist though. Mugen and Jin are reading Fuu's diary and comment on everything she says. It's a very well-done episode.

Yeesh, am I confusing characters?

It's very clear I've only seen one ep of this. ;)

Yeah I think you are.

Jin is the guy that usually wears blue, has glasses, and has long black hair. Mugen is the guy that sort of break dances while fighting, swears all the time, kills for fun, and eats a lot. Fuu is obviously the other character. ;)

OOooh! Ep 12 sounds awesome. :)

Do you know the title?

I too loved the courageous Fuu! She's turning out to be a pretty likeable character, I must admit. ;)

The two titles for the episode are "Learning from the Past" and "The Disorder Diaries."

My guess is it will be called "The Disorder Diaries" on CN. :)

Mugen seems to have a problem with this. This is the second time this has happened to him in so many episodes. He's such a putz at times. :D :rollaugh:
