July Newtype USA review, or: I buy it so you don’t have to!

Let’s start with the freebie DVD. It’s the first ep of Area 88 and assorted trailers – I’m already getting Yugo the Negotiator, and Samurai Gun looks worth a try. It also includes trailers for Gatchaman, Dark Water, Gilgamesh, and others. I’m not interested in keeping this disc, so the first person to call dibsies can have it.

The cover story is Samurai Champloo, and along with all the pretty pretty pictures there’s a very good profile of Shinichiro Watanabe. There’s also a feature on Tsubasa Chronicle, along with a spread on how CLAMP has pulled characters from their various projects and reused them. The other featured series include Maburaho, Madlax, Genshiken (by which I find myself slightly tempted), Sukisyo (I could type out the full name, but I am a lazy git and therefore decline in favor of the nickname) (although since my excuse right there is longer than the actual name, I guess I don’t have much of a leg to stand on) (still not gonna type out the whole name, though) and Trinity Blood (by which I am sorely tempted because I love the character designs and OMG it has the most adorable pope EVAH!).

Then there’s an article about the 25 must-read manga for the summer. It’s a good little article, but there’s nothing startling or in-depth about any of the capsule reviews. It’s like when Entertainment Weekly suggests, “Say, have you considered seeing Batman Beyond?”

Next, we have the (rather fanservicey) Elfin Lied centerfold. As good old Abe said, “People who like this sort of thing will find that this is the sort of thing that they like.” And where do I go to demand centerfold parity? Oh, sure, they had the over-muscled guy from Fist of the North Star a few months ago, but he was all... lumpy and ew. Would it kill them to stick in a bishonen every few months?

The Official Art section is devoted to FMA this time – good selection of images (Black Hayate! EEEEEE!), along with some spoilers for characters they haven’t shown on the CN airings yet.

A brief aside about page 133: I know it’s just an ad, and I know that I’ve never played any of the Final Fantasy games; nor do I intend to change that. But I also know that I want the Sephiroth figure because he’s all articulated and stuff. On a slightly more relevant note, page 152 has some good shots of the new Trigun Maximum figures.

And after that, it’s all reviews. I don’t really care for mecha, but I’m seriously considering giving Fafner a shot.

So there you have it: this month’s Newtype USA.

You beat me to it. I was gonna post one of these myself tonight! :D

But since this doesn't have anything to do with shopping, conventions, cosplaying or plushies. ;) I'm moving it to General Anime Discussion.

Continue there! ^_^

Fair enough -- I'll try to get the DVD in the mail this weekend. And I think I have the last LOTR magazine sitting around here somewhere; it hadn't arrived when I gave you the stack of the others. If I can excavate it, I'll send it along too.

The Trigun figures are really very nice, especially Legato. It looks like Vash and Wolfwood are sharing a base whilst fighting back to back, and that looks pretty damn cool. I forgot to mention it, but they're bringing out a line of mini-Bebop figures as well for $6.99 a pop.

(See, Rommie? We could have kept this where it was because this baby is going to lead to a lot of shopping. Nyah. :P)

Oh, don't feel like you have to mail it. I'm going to try and be in your area around the first or second weekend in September and I'd like to meet up for coffee or something anyway. You can just save them for then. :)

And another LOTR MAGAZINE!? w00t! *bounces around the thread, squeeing in delight*

Sorry bout that.

Oh, those sound awesome! I wish I could afford them!

And mini-Bebops!? I want Spike. And Ein. :rollaugh:

No, it's fine just where it is. ;)

I found the article on Shinichiro Watanabe very interesting. The man has a great mind. :)

Just so long as you realize that by September, there's a pretty good chance that I'll have lost the magazine again. I'll try to have a stack of stuff to pimp to you by then.

Hey, that's okay. I just don't want you to have to spend money on postage and whatnot when you don't have to. ;)

And stuff to pimp to me is *always* a good thing. :rollaugh:

Okay you two, let's try and get this back on the magazine itself. That's why we have the PM feature. ;)

The one thing I love about NewType is that it shows the new series that are in development in Japan. And usually, about a year later, they show up here in America.

Some of the ones in development that I saw in this issue that struck my eye were Love-ge, Kamichu!, and Amaenaideyo!!. I'm not sure why that last one struck out at me, but I'm sure it'll come to me. ;)

Would it be too much to ask to see if someone could scan in a copy of the Watanabe article? I'd really like to read it but I don't have $13 to spend on the whole magazine at this juncture.

Gimme about half an hour, and I'll have a PM for ya. ;)
